What is Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neuro-developmental disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder affects how a person communicates, behaves, interacts with others, as well as their learning styles. Autism is known as a “spectrum” disorder because it refers to a range of conditions and wide variation in the type and severity of symptoms people experience.

The term “spectrum” refers to the wide range of symptoms ASD people might experience, skills, and levels of disability in functioning that can occur in people with ASD.

Autism Signs

Autism is a spectrum disorder that can range from very mild to very severe and occur in all ethnic, socio-economic and age groups. Males are more likely to have autism than females. Autism is a neuro-developmental disorder characterized by the following:

Autism Spectrum Disorder & Communication

Communication development happens differently and more slowly for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Eye contact is a key part of nonverbal communication or slow development of speech. It helps other parts of communication, like being able to notice another person’s facial expressions and emotions. Meltdowns and behaviour is often related to communication, due to the fact they are not able to express themselves.

Autism Nutrition

Autism spectrum disorder or ASD is a complex developmental and neurological condition. It affects the brain function, particularly in the areas of social interaction and communication skills.

There is no cause for ASD, but both genetics and environment are believed to plays a roll.

Sensory Processing Disorder

Sensory Processing / Sensory Integration as it is also known – is the effective registration (and accurate interpretation) of sensory input in the environment (including one’s body).

Sensory Processing / Sensory Integration (SI) is the way our nervous system processes and interprets neurological messages it receives from our 7 senses. (It is the way the brain receives, organizes and responds to sensory input in order to behave in a meaningful and consistent manner).

Leaky Gut Syndrome

Leaky gut, or “intestinal permeability,” as it is also known, is a condition in which the lining of the small intestine becomes damaged, causing undigested food particles, toxic waste products and bacteria to “leak” through the intestines and flood the blood stream. The foreign substances entering the blood can cause an autoimmune response in the body including inflammatory and allergic reactions.

HEALTHY RECIPES & HOME CRAFT RECIPES

With so much attention now focused on the foods we eat and as the battle with “healthy food” intake is sometimes very limited, children with autism might display atypical food preferences, food selectivity, and disruptive mealtime behaviours therefore, more parents of children with autism are looking for healthier mealtime options.

Nutritional Questionnaire

Children with Autism and Hyperactivity display symptoms of over-activeness, disruptive behaviours, can’t relax, lack of focus and concentration, have allergies, have poor immune systems (recurring flu, post nasal drip, congested chest, eczema, etc.).

The first step in addressing such problems is to examine their nutrition. With a balanced nutrition program, the majority of the symptoms will disappear. While learning the basics of nutrition, one will also learn about toxins, junk foods and antibiotics. You as a parent need to understand, what you feed your children affects them in many ways.

Everyone needs to know nutrition – because nutrition is the study of health. If you wish to be and stay healthy, you have to know what your body needs to function at its best. It will no longer be a mystery as to why one feels tired, can’t sleep, can’t relax, gets sick often. The answers lie in knowing and understanding nutrition.

> Nutrition, The Path To Health And Wellness

Fascinated by the human body, how it functions and how we are able to heal ourselves.

Firstly, I might have not grasped this completely after meeting my husband, but after our child was diagnosed with Autism a whole new journey started for us as a family. I have done a lot of research about Autism, its related challenges, sensory related problems, how the body functions due to things we have experienced as parents so that we would be able to understand our non-verbal rainbow child.

I had to create a Fundamental Mind-Body Shift that could Transform my Life, but not just mine, my husband and our son living with autism. This is where my career as a qualified chef and mom of an autistic boy has led me to today. I had to learn and discover how to heal, restore, and revitalize my body and mind. And through this acceptance and understanding as become easier as a parent with a special needs child.

Having a child with Autism or any other related behavioural or learning problems can be very challenging, especially when it comes to their diet and nutrition and how these can have an impact on the human body and their behaviour patterns.

Many of these children tend to be picky eaters and in some cases like Autism, they will have the same meal over and over again. This means that they are missing out on essential nutritional components. Our bodies need the right nutrition in all levels to be able to function at optimal level.

The underlying conditions can often happen due to the fact that our bodies might react to the food we consume. Unfortunately some of these food choices are not always healthy and might contain harmful additives like GMO’s, colourants & flavourings that have an impact on our bodies and general overall wellbeing.

The reason for these conditions can be very different for each child like Cognitive & Behavioural Issues, Poor Language Skills, Focus & Attention Difficulty, Digestive & Gut Problems, Food Intolerance & Allergies, Difficulties Detoxifying, Metabolic Imbalances and Nutritional Deficiencies and may be the results of poor nutritional health conditions.

With the current experience and research, every child with hyperactivity (without exception) has unbalanced nutrition which is made worse by toxins, junk foods, GMO’s, flavourings, colourants and antibiotics.

Are you as a parent asking these questions about your child?
